I'm an old guy with a master's in botany and a bachelor's in electrical engineering, now spending my time building low-cost tools for growing plants indoors. From vertical gardens on wire shelving to research-grade sensor-controlled growth chambers, this site is where I document what works, what doesn't, and what I learn along the way.
I define 'salad machine' as any system that uses lights to grow vegetables indoors. While there are many commercial devices that do this, I will emphasize DIY system and using evidence based techniques.
Whether you're a fellow tinkerer, teacher, grower, or just curious, I hope you find something here to borrow, build, or improve.

Actually just some tests. This is a living site and changes may be more public that usual.
Merlot lettuce and 'Baby' microdwarf tomatoes growing under LED lights.
These 'baby' tomatoes have been harvested several times and continue to produce flowers and fruits. Earlier branches die back and new ones come out without making the plant any taller. Notice that these are in 4" pots! Also notice that these tomatoes are heart shaped. The one on the left just seems to shout: 'Valentine's Day'
